![]() ![]() ![]() Tirmidhi has recorded on the authority of Sayyidna Abu Hurairah (رض) that once the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) asked the people to gather and said: “I shall recite to you a third of the Qur’an?” When the people had congregated, he recited Surah Al-Ikhlas and said: “This is equal to a third of the Qur’an.”. Imam Ahmad (رح) has recorded a narration in his Musnad that a person came up to the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) and said, “I love this Surah immensely.” The Holy Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) ‘ replied: “Your love for it will cause you to enter Paradise.”. Īccording to another narration, the pagans added to their question whether Allah was made of gold, silver or some other stuff, in response to which this Surah was revealed. According to one narration of Sayyidna ` Abdullah Ibn ` Abbas (رض) ، it is Makki and, according to another, it is Madani. According to Sayyidna ` Abdullah Ibn Masud, Hasan Basri, ` Ata’, ` Ikrimah and Jabir (رض) ، the Surah is Makki and, according to Qatadah, Dahhak رحمهما الله and others, it is Madani. In view of these conflicting reports, there is a divergence of opinion as to whether this is a Makki Surah or Madani Surah. Some narratives ascribe this inquiry to the Jews of Madinah. Tirmidhi, Hakim and others have recorded that the pagans of Makkah asked the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) : “0 Muhammad! Tell us about the ancestry of your Lord.” So Allah revealed this Surah. And there hath never been co-equal with Him anyone.He neither begot anyone, nor was he begotten.Allah is Besought of all, needing none.With the name of Allah, the All-Merciful, the Very-Merciful. Narrated Abu Hurairah (RA): The Prophet (peace be upon him) recited Surah al-Kafirun and Surat al-Ikhlas in the two (voluntary) Rak’at of the Fajr (prayer). It also believed that Surah Ikhlas shares a close connection with Surah Kafirun. Narrated Abu Sa`id Al-Khudri: The Prophet (ﷺ) said to his companions, “Is it difficult for any of you to recite one third of the Qur’an in one night?” This suggestion was difficult for them so they said, “Who among us has the power to do so, O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)?” Allah Apostle replied: “Allah (the) One, the Self-Sufficient Master Whom all creatures need.’ Surat Al-Ikhlas is equal to one third of the Qur’an.” In the hadith of Sahih Bukhari 5015, it mentions Surah Ikhlas as being equal to a third of the Qur’an. Whoever truly understands the message of tawhid in combination with sincerity and purity will rid themselves of shirk and indicate being among those saved. Here the message is of Tawhid or the oneness of Allah. Surah Ikhlas is one of two surahs where its name is not derived from the content but instead describes the main theme or subject matter of the Surah. The other surahs of the Qur’an are often named after something that is mentioned in it. ![]()
